What should first home buyers in NSW know?

First home buyers in NSW need to be able to trust their home builder, giving them the confidence they will be with them every step of the way. How much is the first home buyers grant in NSW?

First home buyers in NSW who are building a home, renovating a home or buying a house and land package, can access the first home buyers grant in NSW from the NSW government. When you buy your first home, you may be eligible for $10,000 as part of the grant scheme. First home buyers in NSW can be eligible for the grant if they buy a house and land package valued at up to $750,000. If you are building a home on an existing block, or buying a house that needs extensive renovations, that figure is $600,000. You must move into the house within 12 months of the completion of construction. Stamp duty for first home buyers in NSW can also be reduced, or even scrapped altogether. How does the first home buyers grant work in NSW?

The first home buyer scheme in NSW is pretty straight forward. There are a number of eligibility criteria, but the main ones are that you must be over 18, an Australian citizen, building a new home (or undergoing a major renovation) and you must be an individual, not a company or a trust.

Can a couple both get a first home buyers grant?

The short answer is no, not for the same house. The first home buyers grant in NSW is for the property itself, and it must be for your principal place of residence. It’s also important who owns the house. If the house is owned by both you and your partner, and you or your partner have received a grant as part of the first home buyer scheme in NSW or Australia, then you may not be eligible. You also won’t be eligible if you or your partner have previously owned or co-owned a property in Australia.

Does the first home owners grant count towards deposit?

Some banks and lenders do allow you to use your first home buyers grant in NSW to make up part of your deposit. However, it’s worthwhile speaking to them before you make your application.
