To tile or timber? That is the question

Metricon

The beauty of Metricon’s expansive home design range is that our floorplans offer plenty of open space, whatever your budget. But those gloriously roomy living areas present you with a major dilemma: Should you choose sleek tiling or opt for polished floorboards?

First things first: they are both beautiful options and your choice ultimately comes down to your personal preference. However, it's beneficial to consider a few essential questions to help steer you in the right direction...

How will you use the space?

If your household includes children, pets, or individuals who tend to err of the side of messy, the most practical choice might be the hardest-wearing option that's easy to clean, typically tiles. However, if you prefer the look and feel of wood, investing a bit more in solid timber over laminate is an alternative.

It's also important to consider that certain areas of your home will experience higher foot traffic, such as entry hallways or mudrooms. On the other hand, areas with lower foot traffic, like bedrooms, offer the opportunity to opt for the third choice: soft and luxurious carpet.

How cosy do you want your room to look and feel?

This might boil down to where you’re building. It’s certainly true that if the sun is shining all round, as it often is for our customers in Queensland, tiles can bring a bit of much-needed chill to your happy feet. On the other hand, in the cooler southern states, wooden floorboards may provide a warmer and more inviting atmosphere, both aesthetically and in terms of heat retention during colder seasons.

Some would argue that there’s a more timeless feel to floorboards and that they add resale value. But others still would suggest tiles are the ultimate classical look, with a stylish flare all of their own. It really is about identifying and prioritising your personal preferences.

How big is your budget?

When it comes to the great tiles vs. floorboards debate, it’s worth pointing out that Metricon provides a vast array of choices, whatever your personal preference, so you really can work to any budget.

If you want tiles, you can go all out with marble or other natural stone finishes that are beautiful and hard-wearing. There are also cost-effective alternatives that faithfully mimic the look of natural materials, making it possible to achieve your ideal style without breaking the bank.

When it comes to timber flooring, our selection is equally diverse. You can explore a wide range of laminate options in various shades, textures, and finishes. Alternatively, you can choose from natural oak, Australian hardwood, or engineered alternatives that offer both style and functionality. Keep in mind that installation costs may vary, with tiling generally involving more specialised equipment compared to timber flooring.

Take care

Maintenance is key regardless of whether you choose tiled floors or timber, as both finishes require regular care to stay in top shape.

Tiled floors are known for their durability and ease of cleaning, but the grout between the tiles can accumulate dirt and grime over time, which will need regular attention. If you’re unlucky and a tile gets broken by dropping something heavy, you can probably get away with only replacing the affected one.

Floorboards are still reasonably rugged but more prone to getting scratched up than a tile, so it’s best to take off shoes at the door and pop protective caps or rugs under furniture legs.

There are wood-specific treatments available to maintain the shine and protection of timber floors. In case of damage, you can opt to replace only the affected area, though engineered finishes may not have the same longevity as solid wood.
