Earlier this year, Metricon announced its charitable partnership with
Canteen. You’ve probably heard of Canteen – but you might not know
exactly what they do.
Canteen works with anyone aged 12-25 who has been affected by cancer.
Although initially founded to assist young people who are either
fighting or have fought cancer - their support now extends much further.
If you are a young person whose parent or sibling has been affected by
cancer, Canteen is there for you. They’ll connect you with a support
network of other young people or a Canteen counsellor to talk through
coping strategies. Canteen also crafts and shares an extensive
collection of resources that address the specific challenges young
people face when cancer crashes into their world.
National Bandanna Day
Friday 25th of October was National Bandanna Day - Canteen’s annual fundraising and awareness campaign - and the team at Metricon loved getting involved. We sold bandannas at each of our state and regional offices around the country, and placed bandanna boxes at our most trafficked display homes. Our people also competed in a ‘bandanna selfie’ competition that encouraged them to buy a bandanna, take a creative picture, and learn more about our partnership with Canteen.
Brian and his buddy took out the ‘Most Artistic Photo’ award.
We also had Metricon team members heading out to prominent locations across Australia to donate their time selling bandannas. Mishae Love, our Corporate Receptionist in Queensland, volunteered to sell bandannas close to our Robina office. Mishae said, "I really enjoyed being able to be a part of something bigger than myself. Canteen provided me with a purpose on National Bandanna Day and it felt good to meet new people, build relationships, take on a challenge and make a positive impact on the community".
Mishae went on to talk about the people who she engaged with on her day as a volunteer.
"Every person we met on the day was special because we all shared a
common goal in wanting to make a positive impact for young people. But
for me, the most special people were my beautiful grandparents. My Pa is
undergoing treatment presently, so it was very humbling that he made
the effort to show his support for Canteen being so unwell himself. He
is the most wonderful role model."
Over the next three years, we hope that we can continue to amplify the critical work that Canteen does for young people affected by cancer. Metricon is proud to help Canteen spread the message that there is support out there – whether you have cancer yourself or if it is someone close to you.
