How to style your new home

Metricon

Throwing open the doors to a new show home is always joyous. It was double the love when we presented not one but two at our most recent development in Lochinvar. Nestled in the world-famous wine region of New South Wale’s Hunter Valley, inland from Newcastle, this leafy green pastured place was the perfect spot to present both the four-bedroom family dream home, the Avery, and the similarly expansive and luxurious Botanica.

We’re fortunate to have some of the best interior designers in Australia working with us here at Metricon, but it’s always fun to let a guest have a whirl at putting the finishing touches on their hard work. That’s why we invited stylist Naomi Findlay to visit our Lochinvar beauties alongside Newcastle Studio M Manager Sarah Lively, so that she could share some of her top tips on how to transform your home into a blissful sanctuary that reflects your personality and brings joy to your everyday life.

Do it your way

Naomi says the most important thing to consider before you begin is how best your dream home can speak to you. “Your home is more than just a place to live,” she says. “It’s your sanctuary, the space that reflects your personality and offers comfort and solace.”

She recommends taking the time to soak up some interior design inspo and figure out what works for you. “Whether you prefer modern minimalism, rustic charm or eclectic bohemian, infusing your home with your unique taste will create a cohesive and authentic living space that resonates with your spirit.”

Colours of the world

Establishing the foundation for your unique style begins with selecting the right colour palettes to build upon. Naomi recommends a two-pronged approach.

“Consider using neutral base colours, then pops of accent colours to add depth and character to each room. Remember that the right colour choices can significantly impact the overall ambience, so choose a colour palette that complements your style and creates a harmonious flow throughout your home.” Naomi Findlay

Feel the flow

Selecting the perfect furniture for each room is just the beginning! According to Naomi, the key to a well-styled home lies in proper furniture arrangement.

She recommends spending a bit of time feeling out each space, taking note of the dimensions and the flow from room to room. “Avoid overcrowding, allow for sufficient walking space and consider incorporating multifunctional furniture pieces to maximise space and utility.”

Details, details, details

After you've mapped out the foundational structure of a room and arranged your furniture, it's time to return to your overarching design plan. Now, you can begin contemplating the art of accessorising with rugs, throws, and cushions. However, it's not solely about nailing the colour; there's more to it than meets the eye.

“Texture adds depth and visual interest to any space. Mix and match different textures in your décor. Balancing soft and hard textures can add a luxurious and inviting touch to your rooms.” Naomi Findlay

The same goes for choosing art to create a gallery space with your walls. “Art and wall décor inject personality and creativity into your home,” Naomi says. “Invest in art pieces that speak to you, or consider creating a gallery wall with family photos and cherished memories. Decorative mirrors, clocks and tapestries can further elevate your space.”

Not everything needs to be on show. “Maintaining a clutter-free environment is essential for a well-styled home,” Naomi adds. “Invest in smart storage solutions like shelves, cabinets and stylish baskets to keep belongings organised and out of sight. This will not only enhance the aesthetic, but also create a sense of calm and order.”

Let there be light

It's not only about how you furnish a room but also how you illuminate it, according to Naomi. She emphasises that strategically positioned lighting fixtures have the power to elevate the atmosphere and utility of each room.

Naomi's lighting recommendations encompass a blend of elements:

  • Ambient lighting, which infuses a warm radiance into any area.
  • Accent lighting, designed to accentuate key features in your décor, such as artwork.
  • Task lighting, with a specific function, like facilitating reading or knitting in your cherished armchair

“There’s no substitute for natural light when it comes to enlivening a living space,” Naomi adds. “Remove heavy curtains or blinds that block light and opt for sheer or light-filtering window treatments. Make the most of natural light by placing mirrors strategically to reflect and spread it throughout the room.”

Go green

Naomi says plants love lots of natural light and breathe life into any home. “Consider incorporating potted plants or small indoor gardens. Not only do they add a touch of nature, but they also improve air quality and promote a healthy living environment.”
