If you’re anything like us, when the winter chill seeps into your bones, you can't help but yearn for an escape to a warm and sunny place. Somewhere like Las Palmas, for instance. Situated in the Canary Islands, the capital of Gran Canaria is a beautiful Spanish escape that boasts a unique proximity to Africa, rendering it the perfect destination to thaw and rejuvenate.
Las Palmas is renowned for its stunning architecture, which has greatly influenced mid-century modernism around the world, including the iconic Palm Springs style that first emerged in the United States. This timeless aesthetic embraces minimalist chic with a nod to the sleek design of the 1950s and 1960s, emphasising clean lines and gentle curves. It's enduring popularity is evident - that’s why Metricon has introduced a new façade line inspired by this coastal cool elegance that’s truly sublime.
We spoke to Metricon Design Team Leader Matthew Winter about the inspiration behind Metricon's latest façade, Las Palmas, and why the mid-century modernism movement, with its focus on functionality and form, has had a profound influence on contemporary design.
What was the thinking behind the new Las Palmas façade and what are the stand-out design features?
“The thematic essence of 'Palm Springs' is achieved by emphasising the captivating architectural elements that define its aesthetic. The slender structural portico columns, with their minimalist design, impart a sense of weightlessness to the bold canopy that gracefully envelops the first-floor balcony. At the heart of the design, the interplay of light vertical timber and a distinguished arched window takes centre stage, skillfully framed by a projecting hood that extends in a cantilevered manner along the façade. This deliberate architectural feature commands attention.” Matthew says.
“The seamless integration of soft timbers, gentle curves, and sharp lines creates a perfect symbiosis of form and function. Abundant glazing invites ample natural light into the space, while the light colour palette, complemented by a textured concrete finish, breathes life into the iconic mid-century style, effectively transporting it into the present.” Matthew Winter - Metricon Design Team Leader
What is it about the Palm Springs look that is so popular right now?
According to Matthew, the popularity of the Palm Springs-style can be attributed to the simplicity of its design elements, complemented by lush green landscaping, which collectively create an atmosphere of relaxation and tranquillity. He believes that amidst the complexities of modern life, the minimalistic aesthetics of this style offer a respite, allowing individuals to let go of their worries and find a sense of ease and comfort. By embracing a clean and uncluttered look, Palm Springs-style design provides a sanctuary where one can settle in and find solace from the demands of daily life.
Who do you think the Las Palmas façades will appeal to most?
“This is a classic design that will appeal to a wide range of customers,” Matthew says. "Mid-century modern design holds many of us in thrall, crossing generations from Gen Z to millennials to boomers in particular, who will have a strong affinity for it due to their familiarity with the aesthetic, evoking a sense of nostalgia. Moreover, great design has a way of enduring, never going out of style, and that is precisely why it will continue to captivate homeowners of all ages."
"Mid-century design has made a powerful comeback and is currently riding high on the waves of popularity. You can witness the influences of Las Palmas' inspiration permeating various design spheres, as its essence resonates strongly in the contemporary aesthetic landscape." "It has experienced a renaissance in the digital realm, especially with the advent of social media platforms like Instagram, which have fostered a deep appreciation for architectural brilliance"
