Metricon Welcomes $55,000 Leg-Up for First Home Buyers

Monday, 14 April 2025

Media Release

Australia’s largest home builder, Metricon, has welcomed Opposition Leader Peter Dutton’s proposed First Home Mortgage Deductibility policy, saying it’s a much-needed boost to housing affordability for young Australians.

“This is a bold and practical step toward improving affordability in a market that has felt out of reach for too many,” said Brad Duggan, Chief Executive Officer at Metricon. “With the cost of living continuing to rise and property prices remaining high, first home buyers need real, immediate support to help them take that first step.”

The proposed policy would give first home buyers up to $55,000 in tax relief over five years, putting cash directly back into their budgets. Duggan says this cash injection could make the critical difference between renting and owning.

“In recent years, affordability has become the number one barrier to home ownership for young people. This policy gives them a genuine shot at building a future, growing equity, and breaking free from the rental trap,” he said.

Duggan described the measure as a lifeline for those who have felt locked out of the market.
“We’ve seen too many young Australians give up on the idea of owning a home. They’re not lacking motivation—they’re lacking affordability,” he said. “This policy helps close that gap.”

Metricon believes the proposal is not only impactful, but also fast and feasible to implement.
“It’s a targeted tax measure with immediate benefits,” said Duggan. “And it addresses the heart of the housing crisis—affordability for first-time buyers.”

Duggan also noted the policy would be even more effective if paired with other proposed changes, such as a reduction to the APRA serviceability buffer, which could further improve loan accessibility.

Metricon has reported record engagement across its display homes, website, and social media—signalling strong demand—but many would-be buyers remain on the sidelines due to financial limitations.

“There’s no shortage of aspiration. What’s missing is affordability,” Duggan said. “This policy puts home ownership back within reach.”

“If it’s adopted, the message is clear: the dream is not dead—and the time to act is now.”
